An Introduction to Antique Furniture Part Two

Early forms of furniture were primitive items constructed quite often out of solid pieces of timber. Though quite ornate at times they were still fairly basic items that lacked the finesse of later centuries and manufacturers.

It was during the 17th and 18th Centuries that Furniture Construction as we know more of it nowadays came into its own. With the appearance of Thomas Chippendale (1718-19) furniture manufacture became more sophisticated in its design and execution with finely executed joints and a carcase (body of the item of furniture) that was as well made as the faade.

However as with all things, the prohibitive cost of craftsmanship meant that by the late 19th Century suppliers of Furniture were looking at techniques that could help bring the cost of manufacture down to more manageable and cost efficient proportions and hence the introduction of the earliest forms of machine assisted furniture.

For the purpose of this article we will be looking at Furniture from the following aspects: Pegged Construction and Drawer Construction, and then in the next article a detailed look at styles of two items of furniture, Chairs and Tables.

Pegged Construction

Until the early 18th Century, furniture was constructed by and large using a Pegged or Joined technique using Mortise-and-Tenon joints held together held together quite often just by wooden pegs or dowels and on very rare occasions, nails.

As you can imagine the earliest forms of pegs were quite primitive in their manufacture and acted more like wedges and tended to tighten the joints they were hammered into.

Quite often, as the years would go by these joints and pegs would find themselves being pushed out of shape and this is quite often an indicator of firstly, how old a piece is and secondly how well cared for an item of furniture is with the appearance of these joints.

Drawer Construction

Early Drawers were characterised by the thick sides or linings which were usually channelled so that they could run on bars or runners fixed to the sides of the carcase. As you can imagine these developed quite considerably as the items of furniture or drawers that they were designed to support became more and more delicate and sophisticated. From the 17th Century onwards as with other forms of furniture, the practice of just using simple pegs and runners all but died out to be replaced by more sophisticated runners being placed beneath rather than at the sides of the drawers.

I am often asked as to why a study of furniture is so important? Will it solve the Worlds ills, can it help solve World Poverty (yes if the stuff is manufactured in the right places at the right costs but that is another matter)?

Well the answer primarily to all of the above questions is by and large no but as in all these cases the situation is like anything that relates to the study of History. By only correctly understanding where we have come from, how we arrived here and what we did, can we begin to have any real hope of moving forward without repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

As to how important furniture is?

Well what else would you sit and write on?

Choosing And Buying Sleepwear

So why do you need to be choosy about sleepwear? Most of us go to sleep alone anyway, or next to our spouses or significant others who probably won't mind the loss of style so much once we drift off to sleep. Besides, who cares what you're wearing when you go to bed since it will all be wrinkled in the morning anyway? Believe it or not, millions of people do care about their sleepwear, as evidenced by the brisk sales of jammies and nighties at stores around the world. If you're looking for tips on how to choose and buy your own sleepwear, read on:

Fabric

Sleepwear is made to be comfortable, so keep that in mind. Dont buy one in a fabric that will be itchy and prickly to the skin. Sleepwear is available in different fabrics and materials, most of which are made with favorite fabrics such as cotton, fleece, flannel, silk, velour and satin.

Cotton is the all-time favorite for many sleepyheads regardless of age. It's very comfortable and depending on the quality, can be quite soft. Cotton is also a breathable fabric, easy to wash and maintain.

Other materials such as fleece and flannel are excellent for babies, toddlers and young children, who will appreciate not only the warmth these fabrics bring but also the softness. They're also quite durable and with proper care, should hold their shape for a long time.

If you want the luxurious feel of fabric on your skin, choose silk or satin. The cool fabric glides like a dream and once it has reached the same temperature as your body, you'll feel as if you're wearing nothing at all. That's why many people refer to these fabrics as 'second skin'. For that, you'll probably have to pay more, although if you like luxury, the price will be worth it.

Fit and style.

This is an important consideration when buying sleepwear, whether it's a personal purchase or as a gift for someone else. If you're buying for your own use, try it on for size. Sleepwear should not bunch up in the wrong places nor should seams leave deep marks on the skin. Comfort is a huge factor in choosing the best sleepwear, so make sure to aim for that.

If you're buying for someone else, be sure to know their size or at least be able to approximate it when making your choice. As for the style, again, consider comfort, whether you're picking a long-sleeved pajama set, a camisole, a tank top and shorts set or some of the more elegant sleepwear with intricate designs.

Women's sleepwear and lingerie

Most women's sleepwear consist of pajamas, although you'll probably find a smattering of varied choices in their drawers nightgowns, teddies, sweatpants and even boxer shorts. The key to finding the perfect sleepwear for women is to keep an eye out for both style and comfort. Meaning, the style should fit her personality and the size must be right. Not even the most expensive sleepwear from La Perla or Victoria's Secret will make up for the fact that the clothing is several sizes too big or too small. Go for something that looks good and fits well.

Lingerie is a rather challenging department, especially for men who want to buy their wives or girlfriends a nice gift. The variety alone is mind-boggling, with all its different styles, shapes and make. If you want to play it safe, find out what she likes by either asking or snooping around. Her own stash in the drawer should give you a good idea as to the size and style of sleepwear that she prefers.

Selecting a Case for your iPod

The iPod Case:

The iPod Nano was an absolute marvel from Apple, a tiny bit thicker than a credit card and about the same length, so light you barely knew you were holding it yet it had one thing that was the bane of many Nano owners, it scratches like crazy! This prompted many owners to search out a protective case immediately but with over 500 available just for the Nano it can be a minefield to choose yours. Here we want something that will stop the Nano scratching, give it some protection if it falls and of course it must look good!

XtremeMac have been making iPod accessories since 2002 and are dedicated to producing cases and skins of the absolute highest quality. No where is this more recognizable than with their XtremeMac Microglove, a phenomenal invention for the iPod Nano that will go down in iPod Folklore by many of its devotees, available in 5 colours including a gorgeous red and tasty bright green the case provides ample protection for the Nanos Aluminum casing and has a fantastic look that is instantly recognizable from a distance, they even were generous enough to include a Carabiner for clipping your Ipod nano in its case to your belt loop or rucksack, this case certainly does enough to get our award as the best iPod case on the market.

Another excellent Nano offering from XtremeMac is their Tuffwrap Accent pictured on the left, these are aimed to appeal to all age levels especially younger trendy iPod users. Available in 6 different colour combinations they really did make one for everyone and the protection for your iPod nano is nothing short of outstanding with a firm silicone protecting almost the whole iPod leaving good access to the click wheel and screen and the headphone socket uncovered. Both cases from XtremeMac provide excellent protection as well as great access to the headphone socket.

Our number one case for the 5G Video iPod simply has to be the Tunewear PRIE Tunewallet. Tunwear are a niche company producing a range of accessories from Japan for Apple iPods that are of the highest quality. Never has the iPod been integrated so well into a protective case with room for cards and money as in the case of the PRIE Tunewallet. Made of genuine Nappa leather and priced at 24.99 at most good stores these are also superb value and would not be out of place protecting the Video Ipod of a student or Chief Executive of a large Corporation, they really are wonderful to look at, offer strong protection for the Video iPod and have room for your cards and some money, unbelievable!

For those that like something high tech for their Video iPod and like their accessories strong Matias offer something very special. A full cover case made out of Aircraft Grade Aluminum! Matias have been making their Armour range for Laptops for years but saw an opportunity with the iPod range to get something very special made. They certainly succeeded, a Video ipod incased in a Matias iPod Armour gives the appearance of something completely bombproof and if your iPod gets dumped n a bag or you are accident prone this will certainly keep your Video Ipod in top condition. Inside is a very neat tough almost suede like material to cushion your iPod in the event of any accidents. The headphone port is clear for your listening pleasure but the rest of the iPod is as safe as Fort Knox.

When the iPod Shuffle was released many wandered whether the idea of listening to your music in random order would catch on, it is hard to say what peoples true feeling about random order music was but one thing is sure they bought the value iPof in their thousands as they flew off of our shelves and continue to do so. There are less cases offered for the Shuffle than the Nano and Video but fortunately what we are offered is quality as opposed to quantity in the form of the Griffin iVault. This case is so far ahead of the competition that it is not a competition. Offered in five very eye catching and appealing metallic colours it certainly makes your Shuffle stand out from the crowd. The case screws shut with 4 screws leaving your Shuffle very very secure and still allowing access to the headphone port, control wheel, usb port and LED light. The Shuffle incased in an iVault weighs in at less than 1.5 ounzes so it is still the featherlight Shuffle that you bought it for, a great case from Griffin Technology.

SEO: Gaining Top Placement In The Warm Markets

Search engines become smarter by the minute. It is no longer the sheer placement of numerous keywords on a single page. There is the correct placement of anchored text, the specific Meta tags, the watching out for competitors, the page ranking and back links, the RSS fields, the appropriate content and the link popularity, the robot.txt files, just to name a few.

Today, search engine optimization can only be successful by experts, or by those that have an idea of what search engines are looking for. You must optimize everything on your site if you wish to land within the top 10 on search engines.

In the sense of web optimization, search engine is a broad subject, and a tiny branch of web marketing. When you get your site optimized, individually or with hired help, it must not show a 404 page when pinged, your IP is not blacklisted, it should be easily accessible, it should come up within the first page when searched for, it should be head to head (or supersede) your competitors site, and it should be easily read by search engine spiders.

Search engine optimization doesn't mean much until you know what your business could benefit by utilizing it.

By having your site optimized for search engines, you will gain a higher traffic and a greater chance of your site being back-linked; this will also increase your site's popularity, increase sales, increase potential repeat visits, and increase your visibility in the international market place. Not only does search engine optimization increase the knowledge of your business, it is also an extremely cost effective way to get out there.

Other search engine optimization tools include content articles, keyword density, title tags, advertising, and sitemaps/user menus. These key points are the major stepping stone of any website optimization and they should be used in moderation.

For example, your content should not have too much, but just enough of your keywords in it. It is recommended that your keyword in content density be about 10%; if more than that, or repetitious key terms, search engine spiders may recognize it as spam.

Today's marketer needs everything to be accessible and intact. Search engine optimization is one of the cheapest way of reaching the public. In this current age, everything is moving to the internet and the internet is becoming a very fierce world. Reaching the audience is all that matters if any business is to be performed. Optimization is at its greatest when it is included in blogs, forums, general discussion panels, or mentioned in high ranking sites. Once your site has been optimized to the fullest, cost reductions can come from PPC ads.

Who knows, your site might just become the world's next MySpace!

Paul's Hot Stock Picks For The Week of July 2nd Thru July 6th

HOT STOCK PICK FOR THE WEEK:

InnerWorkings (INWK) is setting up in a cup and handle chart formation and looking to move higher. InnerWorkings provides print procurement services to corporate clients in the United States, and boasts earnings and relative price strength readings in the high 90s. While its industry group carries an average C rating, its accumulation is ranked a very strong A-. .

PAUL'S MARKET COMMENTARY FOR THE WEEK:

The attempted terror attacks in London had the market indexes on the ropes for a while Friday, but when things appeared to be under control, they fought their way back to a large extent towards the end of the session. Though most of the week was typified by early gains, which then dwindled away by midday, the indexes closed out the week with slight gains, with the Nasdaq up .6%, the NYSE edging up .2% and the S&P 500 eking out a .1% rise. Last weeks undercurrent was the trouble facing the subprime mortgage market, and specifically, its effect on hedge funds. But by next week, much of the attention will likely turn to the upcoming earnings season. While the market remains in a confirmed rally, most of the major indexes including the Dow, S & P 500, Mid Cap 400 and Small Cap 600 are hovering near their rising 50-day moving average/support areas again, apparently waiting to see how things turn out. The market indexes displayed more than their fair share of volatility throughout each trading day last week, so caution is advised until we start seeing how earnings season starts to pan out, and whether any more terror plots emerge. As for economic news, look for the Institute For Supply Managements manufacturing index Monday morning, then factory orders, pending home sales, and auto & truck sales Tuesday morning. On Thursday morning, look for the ISM services index, initial jobless claims for last week, and crude oil inventories, followed by Friday mornings very important employment report.

FEATURED STOCK PICK HIGHLIGHTS :

Despite last weeks volatility, most leading stocks closed out last week in pretty good shape. As a prelude to earnings season, recently featured stock pick Research In Motion (RIMM) blasted $34.40 higher Friday on a strong earnings report and higher guidance. One wonders how Apple (AAPL) shares might fare next week, given all the hoopla and huge lines at all the Apple stores throughout the country. Meanwhile featured stock picks like KMG Chemicals (KMGB), BASF (BF), Flir Systems (FLIR) and Capella Education (CPLA) broke out during the week and headed higher. Given last weeks volatility due to the approach of earnings season and jitters from recent terror threats, keep your ear to the ground. Its possible that trading volume will be quiet at the beginning of next week due to the approach of the July 4th holiday on Wednesday.

The Different Skin Types - Which Skin Type Are You?

The way your skin behaves and reacts determines the type of skin you have. Basic skin types include oily, dry, combination, normal and sensitive. The skin on your face is the best guide to classifying your skin type.

An easy way to find out what type of skin you have is to cleanse your face, wait for an hour and then take a tissue and wipe your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. If the tissue picks up oily residue from all these areas, you have oily skin; if it picks up oil only from the forehead, nose and chin (T-zone), you have combination skin; if it picks up dry, flaky skin, you have dry skin; and if you do not find oil or flakes, you have normal skin. No matter what type of skin you have, cleansing and moisturizing twice a day is an important part of having healthy, attractive skin. Choose products that are designed for your particular skin type for maximum results.

Beyond the basic skin types, you may also have sensitive skin. Although sensitive skin is often dry, any type of skin can be sensitive. Sensitive skin is usually thin, delicate, reacts quickly to hot and cold temperatures, is easily subject to sun and wind burns and is prone to allergic reactions. Cleansers, detergents, cosmetics, alcohol-based external products and temperature changes can make sensitive skin red, dry, itchy, blotchy and even reveal surface veins. The most favorable type of products to use on your skin are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) with a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. Before using any product, it is a good idea to test it on the inside of your wrist to see if your skin has any reaction to it. Always choose mild cleansers and use a soft towel on sensitive skin.

Knowing the different skin types, and which one you have, is the first step toward choosing a skin routine that makes you look and feel your very best.

Ipod As The Most Popular Mp3 Mp4 player

This is an mp3 / mp4 player that music lovers acknowledge the most in the modern time. US-based Apple, one among the largest producers of computers, notebooks and computer hardware and software, introduced iPod in 2001 with a single model for the international music market. Apple kept on introducing new iPods for each generation. The latest one is the iPod 5G. Apple also came up with two different variants: the iPod Shuffle (without digital display), the iPod Nano (the smaller version of iPod). Recently, Apple came up with the new-generation of iPod, the iPhone that integrates the conventional MP3 and video player with an internet ready mobile phone.

This article compares each iPod by its special features. One of the most popular model is the iPod 5G that comes with 30 or 80 GB storage capacity. It is not just an mp3 / mp4 player, you can store, view and share complete music videos, movies, podcasts, play games, share photos, playback music and videos, connect to a video output device, and much more. It can play your favorite music for up to 20 hours as this iPod boasts of higher battery life.

The iPod Nano has many of the same features as the full-size iPod, but with much lesser storage capacity. It comes in 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB models. It has up to 24 hours of battery life and is comparatively lighter and smaller. It also suffers from some limitations; the iPod Nano doesn't support voice recording and media storage via third-party peripherals. iPod Nano is a great mp3 player for people who would just like to listen to audio files.

Apple's most-pocket friendly iPod is iPod Shuffle. It offers a host of advantages: it's affordable for everyone; its sound quality is as good as that of any other iPod; it has flash memory rather than a hard drive; and it's really portable. However, the disadvantage is that it doesn't include a screen for steering up to specific songs. It has a limited storage capacity, 512 MB to maximum 1 GB. So it's good for those who want to be in fashion, yet can compromise on memory space. But the size of this mp3 player is so small that you can easily clip it to your clothes.

With digital music being in-vogue, many portable jukeboxes hit the market, since Apple kick-started the music revolution of our time. Other portable MP3 and MP4 players, besides iPod, are available in the entertainment world of mp3 / mp4 players. There are many Chinese, Korean and Japanese brands manufacturing low cost players in bulk. These are much cheaper, but have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The fact remains that iPods are the most popular among all, and hold the biggest share of this market. There are enough iPod users in the market and a lot of new things are getting developed around iPods.

Some people just can't do without their iPods, from jogging time to bed time. It sticks to their ears. Obviously, the battery drains out of the device. The latest buzz is that Andrew Schneider, a student from New York University, is exploring a solar-powered bikini that can charge iPods. Yes, it is true! The bikini will soak up the sun rays thru photovoltaic film strips. That means, while the iPod user is getting a sun tan, his mp3 / mp4 player is also getting a charge of 6.5 volts of solar power.

iPod has become a very desired mp3 / mp4 player around the world. iPod player just seems to be ahead of its competitors. Not just by delivering good quality products, but also in providing new solutions for eager electronic consumers. Lets just wait what will be next in the iPod revolution.

Healthy Fall Housecleaning

As your calendar pages fly by, carrying you through October and into November, many of you will participate in that age-old tradition called fall housecleaning. You'll be packing up the swim toys, summer clothes, picnic baskets, and oscillating fans. Then you'll dig out the winter coats, boots, comfy afghans, fireplace tools, and, if you are lucky enough to live where snow falls, sleds and ice skates.

You'll be busy cleaning out the dust and grime tracked in by kids and dogs and by breezes blowing through open windows all the busy summer long. Before you snuggle in for the winter to enjoy family evenings around the crackling fireplace or have those holiday gatherings with all their hustle and bustle, you'll probably wax, polish, and clean your house until the fireplace glow is reflected throughout the room.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of this time-honored tradition. Not only can you make your home clean, well ordered, and homey, ready for the long winter months, but you can actually make it a healthier place for your family and improve your own personal health as you work.

As you do your fall housecleaning, remember to focus on those areas that contribute to allergies. A multitude of things in your home can trigger allergies, from mold, to dust in bedding and on furniture, to your family pet. Even those friendly, burning candles can contribute to toxic air and allergy problems. Let's discuss these allergy-producing problem areas.

You can find mold in damp basements, refrigerator drip pans, air conditioners, garbage pails, shower stalls, and closets. There are non-toxic cleaning products that will get rid of existing mold. As an extra precaution, use exhaust fans in kitchen and bathroom and open windows on low humidity days to refresh household air. Don't forget to dust and clean heating units and oil burners, checking for foreign objects in heating elements.

As you attack all that summer dust, remember that it contains allergy triggering, microscopic dust mites that feast on shed human and animal skin cells. These fecal-producing dust mites thrive in warm and humid places like beds, furniture, and carpets. After you vacuum and dust thoroughly with a vacuum that filters dust and does not allow it back into the air, use hot-water washing and high-heat drying to launder all bedding and stuffed toys. For further protection, put anti-allergen covers on bedding, even box springs and dehumidify the air, including closets and cabinets.

Remember that your family pet also contributes to toxic air and allergies. Pet dander (skin flakes) is a nearly invisible pollution that your pet releases as it grooms, releasing dander and proteins from saliva into the air. Bathe pet, using dander-reducing shampoo, and follow up with an anti-dander spray. To help keep pet dander allergies down, install HEPA filters in air and heat systems to help keep the air clean.

Have you been wondering how all this work is going to improve your own personal health? Well, I'm sure you have heard that any physical activity that raises and keeps your heart rate in its target zone for at least 20 minutes a day helps you lose weight and get fit. That includes serious housecleaning. As you scrub and polish your home, you can also tone, exercise, and oxygenate your muscles. After warming up with light activity like dusting and tidying up rooms, build up your work intensity and speed to raise your heart rate to your personal workout zone.

As you vacuum or mop, breathe deeply and lunge, switching sides to work out both arms. Put your whole body into mopping, scrubbing, or stair climbing. Swing your arms, pump your legs, and fill waiting time at the dryer or microwave with squats, push-ups, or other exercises. Turn on energizing music and dance your way through your chores. Stretch your body in every way possible as you keep your heart rate in the zone for 20 minutes. Cool down with lighter chores and enjoy your workout, knowing that not only will your fall housecleaning be done, but you will have contributed to your own personal wellness and fitness at the same time.

There's another very pleasant thing you can do this fall that will contribute to the humidity balance and oxygen level of your home and quietly clean pollutants, gasses, and toxins out of the air. You can decorate your home with air-cleansing houseplants. Palms, ferns, and ivy are especially good at removing toxic gases from the air. A plant for every 10 square yards of floor space will both cleanse and beautify your home.

As each room is completed, you may want to set a homey scene with aromatic candles. Unfortunately, candles, especially if they are scented, release toxic soot, carcinogens, and even lead (from wire wicks), that flood the air with enough pollution to ruin computers and furnishings and affect breathing, especially for people with asthma, lung, or heart disease. Fragrance oil candles and container candles don't burn cleanly and are even more dangerous than open-flame candles. You can use diffusers for aromatherapy and choose unscented candles with no petroleum products and wire-free wicks for atmosphere.

When your fall housecleaning is finished, sit back, put your feet up, relax with a cup of herbal tea before the fire, and know that both you and your family will enjoy your cleaner, healthier home in the winter months ahead.

The American Umpire. Conducting The American Empire In A Way Thats As Fair As The Calls In Yankee Stadium.

We were sitting here trying, as usual, to figure out how todays America, saddled with the burdens of inadvertent empire, could conduct itself in the world so Americans are happy about how were doing and the rest of the world might actually either approve or have a hard time disapproving of our behavior. We finally hit on an answer thats so moronic we knew right away it has real potential.

We behave as if were the American Umpire, that is, we call the balls and strikes in the global games based on the principle weve all grown up with, can understand, and most of the world even admires: fair play.

And, being the ump, we expect the players to respond with good sportsmanship, no matter which way the calls go.

Needless to say, part of this easily understandable and highly commendable modus operandi requires us to call the balls and strikes fairly on ourselves, too, even when Uncle Sam strikes out.

Of course, you can advance more intellectual principles by which we should conduct ourselves as the worlds super-duper power. But we think behaving as if were the American Umpire is the principle that most Americans can understand and be proud to be part of and that can lead to conduct on the part of the USA that encourages other nations to cheer us on.

In the land of Yankee Stadium, we learn from the time were children about the necessity for fair play and the demands of good sportsmanship. What American kid hasnt had to make terms with the fact that the ump just called strike three, maybe even with the bases loaded, that roughing the kicker just resulted in a penalty, or that committing the fifth foul of an important basketball game landed the player on the bench, like it or not.

Even if we moderate or lose our interest in sports when we become adults, most of us still retain our sense of fair play.

Of course, many other nations have a highly developed sense of fair play, particularly, we think, England, which may help explain why the UK and the US often agree on policy.

But look high and low around the globe and tell us how many countries you detect with an allegiance to the principle that is more ingrained than it is in America. At any rate, its so much a part of the persona of the gringo that it qualifies as an inviting alternative to our present uncertainty and ineptitude.

In fact, if you look at a lot of the world, particularly its cleverer locales, you notice that as an operating principle fair play doesnt have much of a place. The frequent modus is trying to win by hook, crook, or even murder. What prevails is thinking small quickly, instead of big fairly, sort of like a scurrying bug on a table top. What the wise onlooker knows to do is watch and, at just the right moment, brush it away or outright swat the critter.

The concept can also guide us away from our worst international missteps. When we see ourselves as calling the balls and strikes as fairly as we can, wed know to let the batters swing the way they want to. We wouldnt reach over, grab the bat, and demonstrate how we think he or she should swing. In other words, wed shy away from intervention, except when the player breaks the usual rules of the game or becomes excessively rowdy. Then we might give the offender a warning and, if that fails to moderate the behavior, invoke whatever legitimate power we have to eject the troublemaker from the game.

Wed also know, like any competent ref, to let the overall game go on as best as the players can perform, while we may, if we choose, cast a smile at the winners or a sympathetic look at the losers. And when another nation hits a homer, we certainly wouldnt attempt to trip the runner while he rounds the bases.

And coincidence of coincidences. No sooner did we approve the cartoon to illustrate this simple but super principle than we saw confirmation that it has real possibilities. The following headline, from the Associated Press, appeared on Yahoo: Bush To Referee Karzai, Musharraf Dinner.

No matter what our feelings are about Bushs overall performance, we sensed he would do well. Although we doubt he had the specific inspiration in mind of being the ump, just having grown up with a sense of fair play would help make him comfortable in such a role.

Apparently, he refereed admirably. The three agreed to increase their cooperation in fighting terrorism.

As Musharraf said, "The meeting that I held with President Bush and Hamid Karzai last night was very good. It was decided that we should have a common strategy. We have to fight terrorism. We have to defeat it, defeat it jointly."

Thats quite a departure from the usual ways Musharraf and Karzai have pointed their fingers at each other. But the players still had a hard time making nice. At the press conference that followed the dinner, the two shook the umps hand but couldnt bring themselves to shake each other's. What was missing? You guessed it. A little more good sportsmanship.

But a couple of days later, we noted that Hamid Karzai announced that he and Musharraf will jointly lead a series of tribal meetings along their common border in an attempt to decrease attacks on Afghanistan by the Pakistan-based Taliban. Is that progress or what? And the American Umpire played a positive role.

Lest you believe we are mindlessly advocating a problematic solution, we can only say that the very idea that it presents any semblance of superiority over our present international conduct says more than enough to justifiy mountains of enthusiasm.

So, whatever you do, do not underestimate this idiotic principle. Remember the saying, whether or not Wellington actually coined it, Napoleon was defeated on the playing fields of Eton. And weve got at least as much training as the limeys do on playing fields all across the land of the Yankee.

The preseason warm ups are over. Its time for the regular season to begin. So lets hear the American Umpire call, Lets play ball!

It would be especially winning to see the President throw out the first ball.

The West Wing (Season 5) DVD Review

Premiering in September 1999, the original NBC series West Wing built an instant cult following with its seemingly realistic weekly excursions into the inner sanctums of the White House. The series became such a hit that some pollsters claimed that certain people actually believed Jed Bartlet was the real president (although, if true, this is more of a negative reflection on the intelligence of the electorate, and not necessarily an indication of West Wing's realism). But regardless, the truth of the matter is that West Wing definitely strikes a chord with certain audiences, providing entertaining brew of action, suspense, and drama on a weekly basis

Seasoned Hollywood actor Martin Sheen plays the lead role of President Jed Bartlet. The day-to-day affairs of Bartlet's administration are run by a number of individuals who surround him, among them are: Claudia "C.J." Cregg (Allison Janney), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Leo McGarry (John Spencer), and Charlie Young (Dule Hill). West Wing follows these dedicated staffers as they work extended hours behind-the-scenes to help keep the White House running smoothly. Along the way, the stress of the job and the characters' personal lives make for an interesting glimpse into what many believe is an accurate portrayal of a real-life White House administration

The West Wing (Season 5) DVD offers a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere "7A WF 83429" in which tensions between Walken and Bartlett's staffs continue to flare while the search for Zoey continues. Meanwhile, the death of Shareef triggers a terrorist bombing at a movie theater in Turkey which kills eighty people including members of the US military Other notable episodes from Season 5 include "Constituency of One" in which Amy Parker participates in a personal lobbying effort that incurs the wrath of Bartlett, and "An Khe" in which Bartlett deploys an elite SEAL team to help rescue the pilots of a downed Navy plane that crashed in North Korean territory

Powering Up: What To Look For In Software To Drive Your Local Marketing Efforts

Next year estimates show that companies will spend approximately $950 million on e-mail marketing. Typically we think of e-marketing as the messages we receive in our inboxes from retailers or online vendors, such as Amazon.com, encouraging us to spend more money. More and more non-traditional marketers such as healthcare administrators, however, are using email to drive their business and build relationships and loyalty with their patients.

If patients receive any electronic communication from their health-care provider it is usually an invoice or, more often, to notify them about a problem with their insurance company or their payment. That doesnt create the warm, fuzzy and personalized feeling that we get from Amazon, does it? Amazon makes recommendations on books or movies we might enjoy based on our previous purchases and they address us by our name. They even remember our birthdays.

While Amazon is marketing different messages to consumers than a chiropractor would, the underlying principle is the same. E-mail works, so why arent more health-care providers jumping on board the e-marketing train?

It is simply that they dont know how to use e-mail marketing, understand the technology or how to take advantage of it to build loyalty with their patients. Integrating the right e-marketing tool into your overall communications plan can increase your patient referral base, turn your current patients into promoters of your business and easily provide both current and potential patients with the information and resources they desperately want.

Back to basicshow can I use e-mail to market locally?

Successful marketing goes well beyond an ad in the yellow pages. The best marketers use a combination of different communication vehicles to distribute their message and grow their business. They use their own patients, who are customers in this case, as advocates for their business encouraging them to spread the word to their network of friends and families. This type of marketing has been coined viral marketing.

Your patients will not just spread positive buzz about your practice on their own, they need a reason. The reason might be that you provide quality care, have a great rapport with patients, or that your staff is experienced and knowledgeable. These reasons are givenyou must have them to be successful. Todays patients and consumers want more.

Technology has advanced to a point where the general public wants to feel a personal connection and know that they are receiving service that goes beyond the norm. E-mail marketing helps you to provide that feeling. Like Amazon.com, it allows you to personalize the message to the consumer building a connection and forging a relationship.

But, what is your message? What can you send your patients that are not electronic invoices or a question about payment? Surprisingly, you have a lot of options.

One common, and easily implemented, practice is to develop and send a monthly e-newsletter or e-zine to all current patients with a link for them to forward it to their friends, colleagues and family members. The e-publication might feature updates on insurance laws that may impact patients, information about new treatments, or news about your practice. They are cost effective, easy to produce, measurable and will keep patients informed. They can also be personalized to the patient and can include lighter information such as introductions to staff members or highlights of charity work your practice does to create a link to the community.

Knowing is Half the Battle

Being aware of e-mail as a marketing tool and willing to incorporate it into your business development plans is an essential first step to taking advantage it. Learning how to harness this medium is the next step. It is one that is easily accomplished by knowing your audience and understanding that there are experts out there to help you.

E-mail Service Providers (ESPs) have unique expertise in building e-mail lists, developing compelling message content that will make your patient want to open and read the email, creating templates to add visual flare to the message, monitoring the results of the campaign, and staying compliant with Federal laws such as the CAN-SPAM act regulating e-marketing. They are professional marketers that allow you time to do your job, while they do theirs.

You should look for an ESP that fits your goals and facilitates a seamless transition to e-marketing. Ask potential ESPs these questions to help you make an informed decision.

Do you have a unique IP address for all your clients? An IP address is the unique identifier for every computer on the Internet. Many spammers use a single IP address to send mass e-mail messages violating the CAN SPAM Act. Premium ESPs offer their clients a unique IP address because it helps to increase the rate of delivery to the recipients. Shared IP addresses are common among discount ESPs however you will sacrifice deliverability since you are sharing your reputation with their other clients.

How can you help me reduce the chance my message will be flagged by a SPAM filter? Filters help protect recipients from receiving SPAM messages in their inbox by using trigger words, phrases or symbols to weed out junk email. An ESP should provide you with a tool to check your message for anything that might trigger a filter. If your message cant reach the recipient, the marketing campaign fails.

Does the ESP offer a free trial period? All reputable ESPs offer a penalty-free trial period so customers can review the features before making a decision.

Are the fees in line with industry standards? Most companies charge based on the number of messages sent by the user or the e-mail volume. For volumes under 10,000 e-mail transmissions you should not be paying more than $.03 per transmission depending on the features the ESP includes in the cost. Additional services such as graphic design or Web development are usually billed separately.

What is the duration of the ESPs contract? You should limit your contract to one year or less or have the ability to leave anytime you want to increase your organizations flexibility and management of your e-marketing program.

With just a little knowledge, you can power up and join the other industries benefiting from e-mail marketing.

What You Need To Know Before You Shop Online

Shopping on the Internet used to be the exception; now it is the norm. At any given time, millions of people are buying hundred of millions of items online - everything from sock to SUVs, a new bikini to a new bathroom sink. Yes, even the bathroom sink -- and not your mother’s bathroom sink, either. Today’s consumer wants the sleek good looks of the new glass vessel sinks and Italian-inspired vanity sets that are the rage in Europe and have been featured stateside in upscale magazines and designer showcases.

So, if you are thinking about a bathroom remodeling project, you really should think about buying your bathroom vanity, sink, fixtures, and accessories online. You could save as much as 70% over what you would expect to pay at one of those big “box” stores - more than enough to help pay for the installation (if you’re not going to do it yourself, which is easier than you may think!).

But, before you whip out your credit card and power up your PC, there are a few things you should know about buying online.

Above all, you want to make sure you are getting the highest quality at the best possible price - and from a site that offers the best customer service and has the best return policies and price guarantee.

So, compare sites. You’ll soon find out that many online bathroom supply sites sell the same merchandise… at the same price and with the same discount. So, that’s no bargain, unless you want a “new” bathroom that looks like everyone else’s - or worse yet, like your old bathroom.

What you want is a site that has bathroom fixtures as unique as you are. One that features bathroom vanities, sinks, mirrors and accessories that go beyond the ordinary, but that are functional, practical, and reliable. You want to do business with a supplier that offers the best discount on the best products. Why jump on a 50% discount, when you can get 70% off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price? Why settle for a 15- or 30-day return policy when you can lock in a 60-day policy? Why get a 100% price guarantee, when you can get 110%?

But, where can you find a site that offers all these benefits?

At the Kitchen and Bath Warehouse. No other site beats their prices or polices, and no other supplier can bring European style, elegance, and grace into you home as affordably.

You can see their entire inventory of bathroom vanities, sinks, mirrors, faucets, and other accessories at www.KitchenAndBathWarehouse.com. Check it out - your new bathroom is just a mouse click away!

Brand New State Of The Art Nokia Theatre L.A. Live

To celebrate the opening of the brand new, state of the art Nokia Theatre l.a. live, The Eagles and the Dixie Chicks are coming to Los Angeles .

With a new album out, The Eagles have a lot to celebrate. The Eagles are the best selling American group ever with the album, Eagles : Their Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975, and have established themselves as one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. With four number one albums and five number one singles and millions of albums sold, they have cemented themselves in rock history. With songs such as Take it Easy, Witchy Woman, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Hotel California, Desperado, One of These Nights, Lyin Eyes, they have shown they are a double edged sword - being able to create classic American rock and slower, timeless ballads.

Despite incredible success, the band experienced inner turmoil and broke up in 1980. Eagles members Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley both went on to respective solo careers. However, thirteen years after the bands break up, they reunited with the album titled, 'Hell Freezes Over', which was in reference to the statement made by Don Henley that the band would only reunite when hell freezes over. The album debuted at # 1 with the singles 'Get Over It' and 'Love Will Keep Us Alive'.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the long awaited new Eagles album is expected to be released this year.

Fans have eagerly awaited another Eagles tour and this fall the Eagles will be performing for six nights at the newest concert venue in Los Angeles , the Nokia Theatre l.a. live.

As if the Eagles weren't enough for eager fans, the Dixie Chicks will be opening for them all six nights.

Legendary in their own right, Dixie Chicks are the highest selling female band in any musical genre, having sold over 30 million albums. Formed in 1989 in Dallas , Texas the band endured years of struggle. The band was formed by sisters Martie and Emily Erwin (since married and names have been changed to Martie Maguire ans Emily Robinson, respectivley) and had a largely influenced bluegrass sound. They found some success opening for larger name bands but achieved no radio air time. The lead singer, Laura Lynch, was replaced with now lead singer Natalie Maines in 1995 and the Dixie Chicks found their stride. With the release of Wide Open Spaces in 1998 the Dixie Chicks found their long awaited success with such singles as 'Cowboy Take Me Away' and 'Wide Open Spaces'. The three women trio instantly became known for their soaring ballads, varied instrumental talents, and unique fashion sense. With a mix of twangy country vocals, catchy pop beats created by a plethora of instruments such as the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and dobro, the Chicks sold over 12 million copies of their debut album. Proving they were no one hit wonder, their second album, released in 1999, titled 'Fly', sold over 10 million copies. The Dixie Chicks have been accused of abandoning their country roots but the fans didn't seem to mind. The Chicks have been able to cross all genres of sounds and fans.

However, the Dixie Chicks are no stranger to controversy. Natalie Maines famed comment about President Bush in 2003 was heard all around the world. The comment enraged many country music fans who started a boycott of all things Dixie Chicks. Albums were burned, death threats were made, and air time was taken away. The Dixie Chicks never backed down from their comments and tried explaining their feelings to the public by stating that one could be patriotic without supporting a war. After several years of huge financial loss and abandonment of fans, the Dixie Chicks did what they do best - speak their mind through their music. Sometimes dubbed a 'comeback' album, the Dixie Chicks released 'Taking the Long Way' which went number one on both pop and country charts and became a gold record in less that a week. Their politically infused single 'Not Ready to Make Nice' voiced their feelings of their political controversy and became an instant hit. Even though ticket sales for The Dixie Chicks have become noticeably less in several southern states, their international fame and respect has grown.

With over 13 Grammy awards and 30 million albums sold, The Dixie Chicks have proven they are no where near ready to make nice. Along with The Eagles, The Dixie Chicks will be performing for six nights at the new Nokia Theatre l.a. live.

To house such headliners, only a state of the art venue will do - and that's exactly what the new Nokia Theatre l.a. live has to offer. Part of a brand new entertainment destination in downtown Los Angeles , the Nokia Theatre will boast state of the art acoustics and will be able to house over 7,000 fans. The new Nokia theatre will also be the new home for the Grammy awards as well as the E.S.P.Y. awards.

There could be no better pair like The Dixie Chicks and The Eagles to open the brand new Nokia Theatre - guaranteed to be the concert event of the year.

Growing Quality Tea for Flavored Teas

Tea comes in many varieties. And, flavored teas, which are some of the most popular teas, are made from every variety of tea that can be produced. The most important aspect in obtaining a delicious flavored tea is the quality of the tea base.

Teas are grown in thousands of tea gardens throughout the world, and some are better than others. Simply put, the best tea gardens are those that pay careful attention to the details that go into growing various types of tea. And, the best tea comes from the best tea gardens.

Varieties of tea differ primarily in how theyre harvested and produced. All tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, but the variations in harvesting and processing the tea gives this one plant many different flavors.

Black tea, which is the most commonly consumed tea in the Western world, is fermented tea. The tea leaves are plucked, dried and then fermented to turn them a deep red. (This is why black tea is called red tea in most of Asia.) Black tea is a very healthy beverage. However, the fermentation process that black tea undergoes changes the anti-oxidant levels in the tea leaves, and reduces some of their health benefits, particularly when you compare them to other tea varieties.

Green tea is left unfermented. The leaves are withered and dried and then graded and packaged. This simple processing leaves green tea in a very natural state. The leaves brew up to a green or pale amber color and have a very natural, sometimes grassy, flavor. Green tea has been revered for its health benefits.

Because green tea undergoes so little processing, the teas anti-oxidants are left in their natural state. These anti-oxidants have been shown to be effective at preventing serious illnesses like heart disease and cancer and at slowing down the aging process.

White tea is also unfermented, so it has the same anti-oxidants and health benefits of green tea. However, white tea is different from green tea because it is harvested so early. White tea leaves are harvested only in early spring, before the buds have even opened, and while they are still covered in a fine white hair. This early harvest gives the tea a very light, sweet and delicate flavor. White tea is harvested just once a year, making it the rarest of all teas.

Oolong tea is a semi-fermented tea, somewhere between a green and black tea. The fermentation time varies from country to country, but is significantly shorter than the fermentation period of black teas. Oolong teas also retain a large percentage of their natural anti-oxidants, making them a very healthy tea, as well. In particular, oolong tea is thought to be a very effective weight loss supplement.

Each of these teas has different processing requirements, but all must come from a carefully tended tea garden.

The first work of the tea gardeners year begins in February or March, when the tea plants are pruned. The time of pruning, as well as the time of the first plucking, varies by climate.

The first harvest begins as the tea plants are ready. The best tea gardens still pluck the leaves by hand, so that they can choose only the leaves that are truly ready for processing. The leaves are withered first, sometimes in the sun, and sometimes in sheds, depending upon the area. White teas are often withered right in the fields.

Next, the tea must be processed. This process can be very different depending upon the tea variety. Black teas are fermented at this point, where as green teas are steamed or fired next to prevent fermentation from occurring. Oolong teas are bruised to begin the fermentation process and then fashioned into a ball using a cloth sack. They are shaken or tumbled regularly during the fermentation process and checked regularly so that they are allowed to ferment just the right amount of time. Once fermentation is complete, the leaves are steamed or fired to stop the fermentation process.

Steaming or drying the leaves must be handled carefully to produce the right flavor. Next the tea must be finished. This finishing process includes sorting the leaves according to grade and sometimes, firing them or roasting them one final time before they are sent off to be packaged.

For flavored teas, the flavorings are added at this point. Many tea gardeners make flavored teas only using flavors that they have access to in their area. For example, much of the worlds jasmine tea is made in China, where the jasmine blossoms are the largest and most fragrant in the world.

The tea must be properly stored in order to maintain flavor. It is critical that tea leaves be stored in airtight containers so that no moisture is let in.

During the summer, green tea growers may produce a second, third, and sometimes even fourth harvest. Tea gardens in some areas and producing some varieties will continue to harvest tea until frost. However, it is the first harvest of the year that produces the finest quality green tea. Subsequent harvests will always be a lower grade of tea.

During the summer, the tea gardener will also do battle with weeds and insects. Since the best tea gardens are organic meaning no herbicides or pesticides are used, keeping the gardens free of weeds and pests can be very labor intensive.

Autumn is when tea trees go through their heaviest period of growth. During this time, gardeners will amend and aerate the soil and fertilize the trees. By October, the tea trees will need to be pruned again before the winter comes. Pruning must be carefully timed to ensure that the spring buds will appear at just the right time.

During winter, tea gardeners must pay attention to their young tea trees, as many may need protection from the cold. In addition, many tea farmers will prepare new areas for gardening and plant new tea trees if the weather permits.

Quality tea gardens are labor intensive and require great skill to maintain. It is only the tea gardeners that have this skill, patience and tenacity that produce the finest teas.

While we can't screen your employees, you can keep an eye on them, and a video surveillance system is one of the best ways to do it.

When choosing a video surveillance camera system, there are several things to consider: Hidden Cameras vs. Visible Cameras Wireless Cameras vs. Wired Cameras Indoor Systems vs. Outdoor Systems Video Recording vs. DVR Recording

Hidden Cameras vs. Visible Cameras Hidden Cameras The first thing you want to consider is whether you want your cameras to be visible or not. Modern technology has reduced a video camera down to miniature levels. Hidden cameras can be hidden behind a pinhole, and can be put in practically any everyday item in your house or office, in a briefcase or backpack, or even hidden in a hat or behind a button. The advantage is that the criminal won't know they are being recorded, and you should catch more theft. Hidden cameras could be more expensive then visible cameras.

Visible Cameras A visible camera system consists of any number of visible cameras from the black dome cameras you see in most stores, to the old fashioned kinds on brackets pointing at you at the bank. There are also high resolution cameras that can zoom in to tight detail. The advantages of these types of systems is that your criminal will know they are being watched, and that should deter a lot of crime that normally would occur without the cameras.

Even a series of dummy camera's, camera bodies with no working parts except a flashing red light, are proven to deter crime. If you don't have the funds for a working video surveillance system, just installing four to twelve dummy cameras fools the criminal into thinking you have a real system in place.

Wireless Cameras vs. Wired Cameras You have two choices for the type of surveillance system, wireless and wired. Both have advantages and disadvantages;

Wireless Camera System Wireless camera systems are the fastest systems to install, as you just need to mount the cameras, hook up the wireless receiver in the back room, and wire it all together to a power box and some type of system to record the video.

The advantages of wireless cameras are that they can be installed in locations that are difficult, if not impossible to wire. They can be moved to different locations easily, as often as you like, and if the need arises, they can be hidden inside a moving object like inside your cloth, cap, briefcase or carrying bag etc.

To overcome the disadvantages of a wireless camera, you should buy one with a higher frequency transmission band of at least 1.2GHz or above. If you need to take video from the wireless camera a long distance from the receiver, or there are walls, metallic or steel obstacles between the wireless camera and the receiver, you should buy a wireless model with a higher transmission power, that is, a transmitter with longer transmission distance. Another good idea is to use a high gain antenna for the transmitter or receiver, which will improve the signal transmission/reception.

The disadvantages of wireless cameras are that the video stream might be disturbed or influenced by moving objects or strong radio or even telephone frequencies. Video/audio transmission is limited within the prescribed transmission range. These disadvantages will not occur with a wired camera.

Wireless camera systems are also more expensive than wired systems, as they require a lot of receivers and transmitters to received the video that normally would run in the inexpensive wires. However, the costs are usually worth it, as it could cost less to install, and less to relocated. Overall, the video/audio signals from a wireless camera are less stable than a wireless camera.

Wired Camera Systems Wired camera systems are more stable due to the cable, which doesn't have the interference problems associated with wireless systems. You need to run a video cable to each camera in order to get a video feed. You will have to run the wire either through the walls and ceiling, or have it exposed on the wall. While the cost of the system is less than a wireless system, it will require more work to install, and if you are paying someone, it might cost more than buying a wireless system.

You should look at the total costs to purchase and install both systems and go with what is best for you. Overall, the video/audio signals from a wired camera are more stable than a wireless camera.

Indoor Systems vs. Outdoor Systems Depending on your needs, you will need a camera for indoor or outdoor needs. If you need to monitor your loading dock, you will need a camera that can withstand the elements. Unless it's specifically sold as an outdoor camera, a regular camera can't withstand the beating from Mother Nature that a weatherproof camera can endure.

You can find many types of outdoor camera, dome, bullet, and standard. All are enclosed in waterproof cases and some even have heaters for cold areas. You can also buy hardened cameras that will withstand direct hits from bats and hammers. These are recommended in high crime areas.

Video vs. DVR recording You need to determine if you want to record the activity, or just hire someone to monitor it. It's a good idea to record the video so you can give a copy to law enforcement for future needs. You have two choices, VCR or DVD.

VCR allows you to record the video with a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) directly to a VHS tape. You can use a bank of standard VCR's, or there are high density VCR's that allow you to record days of video. Some come with motion detectors and won't record unless the video changes. The disadvantages are that you have to know about what time the event occurred, or you will have to review all the tape sequentially, or on fast forward.

The latest technology is using a DVR or PC based DVR system to record the video to disc. The advantages are a DVD can be burned from the digital recording. This is the easiest system to review your recordings, as you can jump ahead to any point in the recording, unlike the VHS tape. The initial cost will be larger than a VCR system, though you won't need to buy tapes, and the ease of use will be worth the extra money for a DVR based system.

You have two types of DVR systems, DVR recorder and PC based. DVR recorders feed the video directly into the hard drive or disc on the recorder and you either burn the disc, or back up the hard drive. These come in a variety of sizes, from standard sizes for indoor uses, down to field use DVRs the size of a pack of cigarettes that can record up to 60 hours of video from a hidden surveillance camera.

Your other option is the PC based surveillance system that uses a Personal Computer, a video capture card, and software as a control center that can not only record the video and burn it to disc, a quad can be installed to monitor the feeds on real time over a computer screen, and break it up into quadrants to monitor multiple cameras at the same time, in real time.

We have only just scratched the surface of video surveillance systems with this brief overview, and future articles will focus on the pros and con's of what is out there, and is it right for you.

Don't delay installing a surveillance system for your home or business. You never know when crime will strike and it is too late after the fact. Get it on disc so the police can arrest the criminals.Cherilyn Blog10703

Prenting on the Same Page

Children can suffer when Mom and Dad are at odds in their parenting styles.

Mom says the kids have to be in bed by 8:00 p.m., but when she works the late shift, Dad lets them stay up till 9:00. He says, "Don't tell your mother." Dad says, You wanted to play the piano, so I bought you a piano. He insists that the child practice every day. When hes not home, Mom says its okay to skip the piano. Mom says," You have to do your homework before you can go outside." Dad says, "You need some fresh air. You can do your homework after dinner."

Mom and Dad are divorced. Dad doesn't want the kids to grow up on X-Box and Gameboy. Mom buys them a Gameboy and an X-Box for Christmas. They love Mom. Mom and Dad are divorced. Mom doesnt buy sweets, soda, or potato chips. Dad says, "It's okay to eat junk once in awhile." He buys all the junk food the kids can eat. They love Dad.

You get the picture.

Parents often disagree about how to raise their children. Many parents talk out these differences and reach a common ground. When they do not find common ground, the differences cause problems. Parents begin to ignore each others desires and act as if there were only one parent. The minor differences that occur in almost every home are not damaging; however, differences become destructive when parents make conflicting decisions. Its as if the child is exposed to two entirely different home environments.

How do families end up like this? One parent is at odds with the decisions of the other and chooses to do things differently. The other parent responds by making independent choices. Over time, each parent reacts more strongly to the other parent's decisions. It becomes more important to enforce my values than to resolve differences. Theres a lot of underlying animosity in this situation. When the differences are discussed, its often in angry exchanges that make the parenting gap seem even wider. This family dynamic is unhealthy for kids.

Parents should offer children a world that includes routines, limits, and exposure to experiences that promote healthy behaviors and healthy choices. For children to learn from their two most important teachersMom and Dadthey must see their parents as competent, capable, and reliable. They must know that when you say something, you mean it, and when you set a limit, thats the limit.

Children learn through consistently bumping into the limits you establish for them. If the limits change from day to day or from parent to parent, its very difficult for kids to learn where they really are. In fact, its almost impossible for important messages to get through. If one parent says bedtime is 8:00 p.m. and the other says its not, the parents credibility is undermined in ways that filter into every area of the child's life. It becomes apparent to the children that Mom and Dad don't have it together, and its easy to leverage one against the other.

Many couples who engage in this behavior wouldnt dream of saying bluntly, "Oh, you don't have to listen to your dad (mom)." They would rightly view this as harmful. But the same parents are willing to subtly undermine each others credibility by setting different limits. This is damaging to kids and to a marriage. And yet...Mom and Dad are bound to have differences.

Parental Differences

When we make choices that concern our kids, we have an underlying desire for the children to have certain experiences. One parent may seek structure while another seeks flexibility. One parent may cherish freedom and autonomy while the other thrives on consistency and predictability. One may value routine while the other values spontaneity.

One may be drawn to adventure and risk taking while the other seeks safety and comfort. One may enjoy resisting conventional thought while the other embraces tradition. One is liberal, one is conservative. One likes activity, the other wants quiet family time at home.

Differences exist, and each position has a certain value. When we seek out a particular experience for our children, we have the underlying intention of fulfilling some value.

Some values may seem more "worthy" than others, but too much of any good thing can be a problem. Too much structure leads to rigidity and overcontrol, but too much flexibility leads to lack of discipline and direction. The goal is for parents to balance opposing values.

Its important to be honest about whats really going on. Are you reacting out of anger? Are you more concerned with getting your point across than with what the kids need? Have you let your resentment about not being "heard" by your spouse blind you to the effect of your judgments?

Transform Your Differences

Its possible to allow your children to experience the values that both parents support and cherish, even when theyre different. The following three-step model will help you along this path.

1. Commit to getting on the same page.

Accept the fact that children thrive on a consistent message. Resolve to work on your differences and find ways to resolve them.

2. Determine whats really important to you.

Make a list of your preferences for raising the children. If one of you wants an early bedtime and the other wants a later bedtime, make a note of that. If one of you wants more down time to hang out as a family and the other wants more activity, note that.

List all your differences. Review the list. Dont react defensively to differences. Instead, calmly ask each other, "What is really important about ___________?

For example,
"What's really important about having the kids stay up to watch a movie with you?

What's really important about spending all day Sunday at their grandparents house?

"What's really important about having the kids play soccer instead of football?"

What's really important about having them get their homework done before dinner?"

Take careful notes. What is important to the other parent? Take turns exploring the basis for your preferences, whether its bedtime, PG movies, or playing football. Take the time to explore and understand each others values and what you want your children to experience through those choices. Search for the broad, underlying motivation behind the experiences you seek for them.

Be honest about what each of you is really saying in your preferences. Youll find that certain experiences youre seeking for your children reflect solid values while others reflect values that are questionable. Some of your values may promote healthy behavior and choices while others may simply reflect your desire not to be controlled or your need to defend the way you were brought up.

Ask, "How will that serve our children?" This is not an aggressive question; it's an effort to mutually explore and understand. Remain open and interested. Keep exploring until you have a good sense of the underlying values behind the experiences both of you are seeking for your children.

3. Transform values into specific experiences.
Armed with a list of broad values that you agree on, ask yourselves, "What specific experiences will fulfill those values?" In other words, start with the values and ask yourselves how you can make certain your children experience them.

For example, if I want the kids to have an 8:00 p.m. bedtime because I value consistency and you allow them to go to bed at 9:30 because you value maintaining harmony, we can resolve this problem by developing a plan that gets the kids to bed at 8:00 without a fight.

Maybe I think a PG movie is okay for our 10-year-old because I dont want to see another Disney movie. You value exposure to age-appropriate language for our daughter. We can agree to go to more adult movies by ourselves and take turns taking her to Disney movies.

I value down time and giving them a chance just to be kids; you want them to get their homework done first, because you value education. Perhaps I can take more responsibility for creating down time with the kids after the homework is done. In this way, they get the message that homework is important.

This Is Work!

Resolving these differences is hard work, and parents tell themselves two big lies to escape the work thats required to get on the same page.

Lie #1. Consistency doesn't matter.

We convince ourselves that consistency isn't important. We laugh about how weve told our kids that they can't watch R-rated movies but they keep renting them at the video store. We tell a child she can't have dessert if she doesnt eat the healthy food on her plate. Two hours later, we go out for ice cream.

Consistency matters. It is essential to accept this fundamental principle.

Lie #2. Unhealthy behavior can produce healthy children.

Many parents do not address this fundamental error in their thinking. Their eight-year-old is 40 pounds overweight, but they continue to buy potato chips and ice cream. Somehow they think this doesn't matter.

A parent comes to me out of concern for his aggressive, mouthy 11-year-old son. Yet he chuckles about how he probably "goofed" by taking his son to see Eight Mile, a movie filled with violence and profanity. Kids listen to music that denigrates women and ethnic groups and shows no respect for authority, and some parents think this doesn't affect their behavior.

Imagine that you had some poison in your kitchen cabinet that you knew would damage your children. It wouldn't kill them; it would just take away their energy, limit their activities, and diminish the quality of their lives. Would you feed them this poison? Yet parents allow their children to consume foods that deprive them of energy. They feed their kids foods that make them fat or fill their lunchboxes with nonnutritious sweets. Parents allow children to listen to music that undermines education, cooperation, and responsibility. They allow exposure to violence while insisting that they don't want their children to be violent.

In the quest to get on the same page, its important to raise these difficult issues. At times, the underlying values parents are fighting for are unhealthy. You cant expose your children to toxinsunhealthy foods, unhealthy music, violent videosand think that it wont make a difference. It does make a difference.

Structure is good for children. Within the structure, its healthy for them to experience freedom, autonomy, and the opportunity to make choices. These are healthy values, and committed parents, regardless of their differences, can find a way to ensure that their children are exposed to experiences that promote these values. Certain choicessuch as promoting exposure to unhealthy activities in the name of freedomcannot be defended.

I encourage parents to thoroughly explore the values theyre fighting for and make sure that theyre worthy. If they are, you can then turn your attention to how you can offer experiences to your children that promote these values. In this way, healthy differences can be resolved and bad values can be weeded out and left behind.

Learn to Type with Typing Games

For children, the ability of using the computer is becoming fundamental in nowadays, so learning to type is must for them. But most children get bored with any repetitious task and give up or whine and even want to stop, parents or teachers always feel nothing else bother them more than when children face the keyboard and have absolutely no idea where the keys are or how they go about typing. They just "play" with the keyboard. This is a waste of time for them and, worse, children get into the bad habit of typing with two fingers. So parents or teachers have to face how to solve this problem.

As parents and teachers know, whether children want to learn a thing or not largely depends on whether they are attracted by it. Based on this, the typing tutor must be easy-to-use, fun colorful and appealing to children. Once children love and develop interest in it, they will learn to type on their own initiative. Generally, children naturally like to play games, because when playing games, they are always attracted by the colorful interface and pretty music in the games, and above all, they're able to learn something quickly under no pressure. Apparently, the problem for children having no interest in learning to type is solved, they can learn to type when playing games.

There are many advantages of using typing games for typing: First, Games are a welcome break from the usual routine of the typing practice, thus help children learn typing more easily. Second, Typing requires a great deal of effort. Games help children to make and sustain the effort of learning. Third, Games are highly motivating since they are amusing and at the same time challenging.

There are lots of interesting typing games which also help to make typing fun. GS Typing Tutor is just one. The aim of this program is to make typing fun whilst increasing accuracy and speed. The feature-rich typing software supports 5 typing games: Rats in the garden, attacks of the alien, help, balloon, and card. The typing games each include 23 basic typing lessons. Taking the basic lessons, children can learn to type from the home row keys to other basic keys. The basic exercises also help them to be familiar with the keyboard layout step-by-step.

Each game is easy-to-use, fun colorful and appealing to children:

1: Rats in the garden Children mission is to eliminate the rats in the garden. Then they should type the letter before the rats escape. If children type the wrong letter or type slowly, the rats will escape under their nose. So they have to type correctly and fast in case the rats escape. The game is fun!

2: Attacks of the alien Children mission is to stop the alien fleets to attack the earth. So they must type letters before the alien fleets through the galaxy into the earth. By playing the game, children type the letters, and can be familiar with the keys. With children accelerating the typing speed, the alien fleets fly rapidly, so they have to type quickly in case the earth is attacked by the alien fleets.

3: Help! A bad man has held a boy under duress. So children must help the soldier to rescue the boy by typing the letter. If their typing speed is slow, the boy's life is under danger. Once children succeed to rescue the boy, the boy will laugh loudly for thanking.

4: Balloon Falling Letters are ruining the balloons. Save the balloons by typing the letters before the balloons land on the ground. Lots of fun! The more children type the more score they get.

5: Card The letters are arranged random based on the keys children choose. Type the letters on the card. This will help them to know well the basic keys.

With playing typing games, the typing program helps children easy master a skill needed in today's computer oriented world. Download it at http://www.typingstar.com/
